24th-26th August 1991: Street Level Free Party in Cassington, Oxfordshire

May 25, 2017

Update: Darren sent us his account of the night, thanks Darren! 🙂

Freepartypeople: Heard about this a looong time ago but didn’t attend it myself. Allegedly went on for 3 days and was still running on the Monday, hence the dates at the top of this post (Saturday 24th to Monday 26th).

Were you there? What was it like? Please leave a message in the comments.

Found some great photos on this page:
http://www.its-all-about-flyers.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=768 Thanks to the original uploader, they’re great shots.

We also found a drawing of the party, which is a first for this site 🙂

The same Flickr user also uploaded a newspaper cutting about the party:

Thanks whoever you are! I thought I’d link to your page rather than just nicking the image, ‘cos that’s not nice, I like what you’re written as well.

And here’s an Easygroove and DiY tape from the event. I listened to it a while back and I remember there’s a funny bit where he gets on the mic and starts complaining about a lack of Special Brew ;P It was a bit tricky to find, but we finally tracked it down on a Polish website!

Also available on Youtube, but I don’t know whether this is the complete set or not:

Help us find the DJ Aztek Cell-Bound Selective mixtapes!

December 5, 2010

We just received this email from Joe, who has since managed to rip this tape (see comments below for download link):

I’d would first like to say I enjoyed looking through your website very much, it makes for a great read!

I am contacting you because your site mentions (briefly at least) a DJ Aztek. I do not know if this is the same Aztek as I am going to ask you about, but it’s definitley worth a shot. I have been in posession of a mixtape by Aztek for some years entitled Cell-Bound Selective/05. It is from some point in the ’90s, I am not too sure when, I was way too young to be raving back then, but it was given to me by a friend, much older than me, who was in prison with Aztek (I think he was in there for selling E’s, not sure, we wont go any further into it!) which is actually where this tape was mixed; HMP Blantyre House.

I have scanned the card cover of the tape for you to have a look at, I’m not sure that you will be able to read it though so here is what it says if you cannot:

“Hi, to those of you who were puzzled by the latin phrase on cellbound selective 04, I give you the following translation to think about…

To no man
will we sell,
or deny,
or delay,
right or justice…

(Magna Carta 1215AD)

What more can I say!

Serenity, Tranquility ‘N’ Peace!
Aztek”

after giving the address of the prison for promo vinyl etc. (it also says his name is Jarvis) it goes on to say:

“This tape is only a sample of my many moods from Detroit Techno to Trance – look out for Cell-Bound Selective 01, 02, 03 and 04 – increased musical experience.”

Basically, I love this tape. The music is absolutely fantastic and I would love to track down the rest of the series or maybe even get them up on the net? I would happily upload this mix but I have no idea how to convert from tape to mp3… if you know how or would like to hear the mix please share the knowledge!

I have never been able to find anything about Aztek or the Cell-Bound mix series on the internet, but you guys look like my best bet. Any help you could give me at all would be greatly appreciated. This music shouldn’t be lost to time.

Peace, Love & Unity
Joe.

We can confirm that it’s the same DJ Aztek, but unfortunately we don’t know where to find the rest of these mixes. Can anyone help? It would be great to track them down online 🙂

Here’s a nice interview with Aztek on fantazia’s site for a bit of background: http://www.fantazia.org.uk/DJs/djaztek.htm

Aztek is the only DJ I remember being aware of at a Spiral do, otherwise they were pretty anonymous. Aztek really made a big impression on me with his tunes at the festy in Kerry, Wales.

We know there are some other great DJ Aztek mix tapes doing the rounds, please post them in the comments!

DJ Die Circus Warp mixtape from 1992

April 12, 2010

Thanks for the link, Luc! Enjoying it now.

(See comments for download address).

DJ Die went on to become a drum and bass producer and founder member of the Full Cycle record label.  The Full Cycle and Dope Dragon labels sprang out of Circus Warp’s own label WTP (Where’s The Party At?).

There’s also a great Circus Warp mix by Sparks and Martian which can be found here: Part 1 and here:  Part 2 ,  and a slamming Easygroove Funny Farm Circus Warp tape which can be found here.
